NDA produce interactive DVD to inform public of plans for geological disposal of higher activity radioactive waste
Wednesday, July 28, 2010

The Nuclear Decommissioning
Authority (NDA) is responsible for delivering a lasting solution for managing
the UK's
radioactive waste in the form of an underground disposal facility. The UK
Government is responsible for finding a site through a voluntarism and
partnership approach with a local
community.
The plan to move forward
requires considerable engagement with local communities. To inform the public,
therefore, the NDA decided to develop an interactive DVD giving an overview of
the work they have been doing to implement geological disposal in the UK, and future
plans.
As with any interactive development,
the key to ensuring a great user experience is an uncomplicated interface and
intuitive navigation.
The DVD needed to contain information in various formats – from PDFs and web pages, to animations and videos with narrative from senior NDA directors. To ensure that everything was easily accessible and clearly presented, we decided to perform a wire framing exercise and create a prototype which we would be able to tweak and test extensively.
The wire framing exercise is a collaborative process. As such we use an online rapid prototyping tool to showcase layouts, define site structure, and show key functionality; and NDA staff were able to add comments throughout the process regarding all aspects of the development.
With a visual specification
for the DVD, we were then able to develop several detailed designs, which we
tested and tweaked to achieve the final result.
Tackling the UK's
nuclear legacy is about restoring and improving the environment, so the NDA see
environmental leadership as an essential part of the process.
Therefore, and in addition
to high level operations, the NDA is also committed to minimising the impact
they have on the environment as a result of their day to day operations. To
this end, we sourced ecological packaging made with material from well managed
forests and other controlled sources for the physical production of the DVD.
The final product was
delivered on time, to specification and budget, and the NDA was very pleased
with the result and is asking users for their views.
