The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) is a non-departmental public body, set up in April 2005 under the Energy Act 2004 to take strategic responsibility for the UK’s civil nuclear legacy. The NDA’s mission is: “To deliver a world class programme of safe, cost-effective, accelerated and environmentally responsible decommissioning of the UK’s civil nuclear legacy in an open and transparent manner and with due regard to the socio-economic impacts on our communities”.
With such an important mission in hand the NDA requires an easy to use, dependable and up to date intranet to communicate effectively throughout the organisation.
In August 2005 the NDA issued an invitation to tender for the design and development of a corporate intranet to be used by up to 200 staff, a quarter of which would be based in regional offices.
Amongst the project requirements was a rapid development time (one month), adherence to brand and prototype/interface requirements, flexibility to enable further enhancements to be made in the future, compatibility with existing systems, and a solution that would enable staff without html knowledge to publish to the intranet.
Cyber Media won the contract on the merit of the well established and respected product that was proposed, and the company’s experience with similar projects.
The proposed solution involved a rapid deployment of CommonSpot Content Server, some extra modifications and developments, and training. Time was a critical factor of the project. Using an off-the-shelf product enabled the tight time schedule to be met by quickly deploying the main system.
Cyber Media’s experience and professional Project Management ensured that everything went according to schedule and the project was delivered in time, to budget and with full functionality.
The new system was received with enthusiasm. The new intranet is usable and used; a testament to the project’s success. It enables staff without html knowledge to easily publish to the intranet, and staff outside of the office to securely connect to the system as if they were in the central offices. It provides a robust, yet flexible platform, and offers extended functionality that can be further expanded with additional plug-in modules or custom development.
Cyber Media also provided training to NDA staff and continue to provide hosting and support. We always endeavour to form long term collaborative relationships with our clients, and this case was no exception.
“We were impressed by the Cyber Media team. They delivered exactly what they promised within the tight schedule; and did so in a very professional, yet friendly and approachable manner.”
